As from 2021 FTP will not be installed by default on any new hosting servers.
The reason for not offering FTP is mainly a security concern. We advice all clients to use SFTP instead.
For the proper configuration and/or setup you will need the SSH port of the server as described in your welcome email. If you have lost or have an outdated welcome email, please create a ticket in our support system and we will provide you with the needed details.
SFTP connections are fully encrypted and therefor much more secure, also SFTP connections only use 1 port in the firewall and is thus much easier configurable and doesn't need a wide range of ports opened up to function properly as is needed with FTP.
The drawback of SFTP vs FTP on a cPanel server is that SFTP only allows you to login with the main account user, you can't create additional SFTP users for now. If you have questions about this policy feel free to create a ticket and we will look how we can assist you in your pariticular situation.
It is important to note that FTP itself is not explicitly disallowed by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). However, the use of FTP can potentially introduce security risks and vulnerabilities that may compromise the protection of personal data, which is a key aspect of GDPR compliance. FTP transfers data in plain text, meaning that sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, and data files, can be intercepted and accessed by unauthorized individuals.
To comply with GDPR requirements, organizations are encouraged to adopt more secure protocols for transferring personal data, such as SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol). SFTP provide encryption and additional security measures to safeguard the confidentiality and integrity of personal data during transit. By discouraging the use of FTP, GDPR aims to promote stronger data protection practices and mitigate the risks associated with insecure file transfers.
