Well from our point of view the answer would be (almost) never, let us explain why:
- a VPS is a shared system just like shared-hosting or semi-dedicated hosting; this simply means that the only benefit you get is that you run your own limited OS ontop of a larger machine, but you will still share the hardware node with other clients. While most resources these days can be limited like diskspace and memory, there are also resources which can't be limited i.e. Disk IO and Network IO. If any of the nodes is using to much of either of them it will slow down or make the other nodes evern fully unreachable.
So a VPS can be great if you have full control over the complete VPS hardware node and want to have different systems, maybe even different OS versions next to each other and when monitored well it could be a solution. Also for those who need a staging environment to test it could be a real time saver.
In some very specific cases there might be need of certain modules which can not be found on shared or semi-dedicated host providers, but the budget does not allow you for looking into a full dedicated server yet. Also in this case a VPS node might be a viable solution.
We believe you would be able to get a much better performance by skipping the virtualization layer totally and simply go for non oversold shared hosting, semi-dedicated hosting, or even (budget) dedicated server hosting. In the end you will be happy you made the choice for a stable evironment.
040Hosting therefor decided not to provide any VPS servers as we believe our current services are far superior to what VPS can deliver at this point in time, although if this does change in the time to come we me reconsider our policy.
